Despite being barely on the map when the Gilded Age bega, Sarasota was profoundly shaped by events and personalities from this exciting period. Join Dr. Josh Goodman, manager of the Sarasota County History Center, for a deeper look into this fascinating chapter in our local and regional history.

Vicki Oldham – Newtown Alive: Courage. Dignity. Determination
Thursday, March 16, 2 p.m.– 3 p.m.
Vickie Oldham is President/CEO of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, Inc. SAACC’s goal is to open an art center and history museum. The precursor to the historic preservation project is “Newtown Alive.” The initiative traces the history of Newtown, one of Sarasota’s oldest communities. Vicki Oldham and singer Brenda Watty will bring Newtown Alive for us today.

Jacob Winge – “Pirates in Paradise- History of Piracy in Florida”
Saturday, March 25, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Join Jacob Winge as he takes us on the high seas for stories and legends surrounding the Golden Age of Piracy and the epicenter of trade, geographic importance and commerce in the new world- Florida! Meet some of the swashbuckling buccaneers who called our backwaters home and learn about 17th and 18th life, clothing, weapons and more!
